STFC/RAL Space is designing and building the Radiometric Calibration Test Rig (RCTR) for the MicroWave Sounder (MWS) instrument to be flown on the MetOp Second Generation mission.

As part of RAL Space project MWS, an RF target assemblies need to be fabricated, which requires joining of several components by use of appropriate welding technology.

RAL Space are interested in using Electron Beam (EB) welding for this particular set of assemblies. One of the critical parts of the project is high quality welding near temperature sensitive components, for which precise knowledge on welding spot area temperature distribution is required in order not to damage sensitive epoxy layer during welding. In order to proof the welding procedure and the welding quality of the assembly, welding trials will be required to verify the quality and the optimum welding parameters to be used for welding of all the final components of several RF target assemblies."
