Description
This project seeks to produce pathways for the UK to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by the earliest date possible in the first half of the century.
Through this project WWF seeks to better understand how the UK can meet net-zero emissions as soon as possible and by 2050 at the latest, completely or at least mainly through domestic action. We want to use this report to help raise the UK's ambition on tackling climate change, making it among the first nations to match the promise of the Paris Agreement.
We are looking for a bottom-up study - what policies and measures could be implemented or expanded across the entire UK economy, and by when. This could, for example be done by starting with the CCC's 2050 scenario (an 80% reduction in emissions vs 1990 levels) and working backwards to highlight the necessary additional measures needed to achieve 1.5°C consistent within the UK policy framework. We would also like this report to look at how the UK would apply Johan Rockström's "carbon law" and halve emissions each decade .
We want this report to look at emissions across buildings, transport, power, waste and land-use, building on previous work in these areas from WWF (see references on the attached ToR document). We want to cover the short-term actions and transitions that need to occur to meet the 1.5°C limit. As well as rapid and deep emissions reductions, carbon dioxide removal will be needed to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. We want to explore what is the maximum role for nature-based carbon dioxide removal in the UK.
