Description

This Programme aims to achieve change in access to, purchase of, and use of smart energy technologies, products and services among low income and vulnerable consumers.

The up to £2.75 million Inclusive Smart Solutions Programme sought to procure a research, design, and development contract to help achieve a step-change in access to, purchase of, and use of smart energy technologies, products and services by low income and vulnerable consumers.

The programme aims to conduct research and engagement with low income and vulnerable consumers to gain a better understanding of the barriers faced in the transition to a smart, flexible energy system. This initial research, along with ongoing consumer engagement, will inform the design, development and testing of a suite of commercially viable innovative solutions that will facilitate increased participation of low income and vulnerable consumers in the emerging smart, flexible energy system.

Project Summary:

Bringing together its expertise in consumer insights and energy system innovation, Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) will deliver on the aims of the Inclusive Smart Solutions programme through 2 phases of work between September 2023 and March 2025.

Phase 1 will focus on conducting primary research with low income and vulnerable (LIV) consumers to maximise the understanding of their needs and existing barriers, using this research insight to inform and develop innovative solutions for LIV consumers.

This will be delivered alongside a thorough 'Open Innovation' selection process, to identify up to 4 innovative solutions from both within and outside the energy sector. In Phase 2, the selected innovative solutions will be developed and tested iteratively with LIV consumers. This approach will incorporate alpha (co-creation of solutions with LIV consumers) and beta (testing at increasing scale with LIV consumers) stages.
