Description

The scope of works for this package is the bulk excavation of made ground, alluvial material and crag sand from the Main Construction Area (MCA) and transportation to either the suitable material stockpiles or unsuitable material disposal areas within the Temporary Construction Area (TCA), to allow for the placement of backfill material for the nuclear plant building foundations. The scope will also include for all material testing required by the specification and the management of the stockpiles and unsuitable material disposal areas. The backfill placement (not part of this scope) will commence in available areas while the bulk excavation is still in progress within the MCA. The essence of the bulk excavation operation, together with the subsequent backfill placement, is to enable commencement construction of Units 1 and 2 on the earliest practicable dates.

The bulk excavation quantities, by type are:
Made Ground including Crag Sand - 912,000 m3
Alluvial Deposits, including peat - 914,000 m3
Crag Sand - 1,443,000m3

The key elements of the scope are:

Bulk Excavation:
Excavation and loading into transport vehicles (typically 45T all -terrain dump trucks) of made ground, alluvial deposits and Crag sand within the MCA.
Assessment of material suitability or otherwise (jointly with CWA) including testing as necessary.
Marshalling and management of vehicles and equipment within the MCA.
Maximising excavation of the three primary material types, recognising that excavation at the interface between layers will result in some mixing.

Transport and Discharge:
Transport to the storage or disposal locations within the TCA, using the segregated heavy haul road. This haul road will be managed by the CWA and will be used primarily by material-hauling vehicles for the bulk excavation works and backfilling operation.
Discharge as directed by the stockpile managers (management of the suitable material stockpiles and disposal areas will be by the CWA).
Testing to verify compliance with the specification, in accordance with the approved Quality Plan.
Shaping and compaction of stockpiles and disposal areas, in accordance with the specification and CWA direction
