Description

Under the Highways Act 1980 Leicester City Council is responsible for ensuring the safe passage of vehicles along the highway. This includes gritting the highway network of Leicester during the winter service period when ice and snow can make driving conditions dangerous.

We currently have 6 gritting vehicles in our Winter Service fleet. Currently each gritting vehicle is fitted with a tracker and a satellite navigation unit (SatNav) connected to the vehicles Econ Spargo control box. The trackers track each of the vehicle's movement and are used to check the driver's performance. The data from the tracker can be used as evidence in court for any accidents and personal injury claims made against the City Council. The sat nav units have preloaded gritting routes and by having the sat nav system in each vehicle, our drivers can fully concentrate on their driving and not worry about missing out sections due to driver error.

The City of Leicester is growing, and the road network is constantly changing. The existing gritting routes on the satnav that were captured by the gritting vehicle trackers and digitised a few years ago are now out of date. These routes need amending and optimising so that the drivers can drive their routes in the safest possible manner, taking the shortest possible distance to minimise fuel usage and delivering the optimum amount of salt over the route.
