Description

North Somerset Council is procuring works to restore the Birnbeck Pier Structure, connecting the mainland to the Birnbeck Island. This structure is Listed Grade II*. This is specialist work in a complex marine environment so the prospective contractors will be required to have extensive experience and expertise working in the marine environment and of heritage structures.
The work in scope for this tender is summarised as follows:

• safe dismantling of existing superstructure,
• repairs to the 15no. existing trestles/ legs, inc new trestle bracing,
• new primary trusses/ girders, new transverse deck beams and bracing, new timber deck, new bench seating and guard rails,
• 14no. cantilevered bays with beams, deck, bench seating and railing to suit,
• new service tray and ducts to underside of deck, between services chambers in deck and terminating in chambers within the abutments at either end of pier,
• reconstruction works to abutments,
• Pier lighting.

As the project is entirely funded by grants, the budget is capped.
Generally, we would not award a contract to a supplier if the annual value of the contract was more than 50% of the supplier's turnover due to the significant outlay on plant and materials.
