Description

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
There is a duty placing responsibility on Local Authorities to deliver short breaks for carers of disabled children and young people.
ESCC has allocated funding to develop short breaks capacity in order to assist those who care for disabled children to continue to do so, or to do so more effectively by giving them breaks from caring.
Short breaks also give disabled children and young people the chance to spend time away from their main carer. It is a time when they can enjoy play and leisure activities and build new relationships, whilst their main carer has a chance to recharge their batteries.
A short break can take place during the day, in the evening, at the weekend or overnight, and can happen in the child's home, in a carer's home, or in a residential or community setting.

Short breaks can be in specialist and universal settings, and can be planned and regular as well as being available at short notice.
