Description

Pow Wath Bridge is a single-span R.C. slab structure which carries the U2057 over Pow Beck in Orton, Carlisle. This bridge has a span length of 3.96m. The height of the soffit is 1.17m. O.S. grid Co-ordinates 331731E; 551973N.

A General Bridge Inspection (GBI) in September 2022 identified significant spall to the concrete deck exposing corroded re-bar over large areas underneath the bridge. In addition to the spall, there are many other areas of delamination throughout with sections that could easily be knocked off.

In November 2023 and February 2024, Concrete testing and assessment were undertaken at Pow Wath Bridge. Following this, a temporary 7.5 Tonnes Maximum Gross Weight Restriction was implemented until repairs are carried out.

Cumberland Council are progressing a scheme to replace the existing bridge with a precast reinforced concrete structure and masonry parapets. This project is to be let as a construction contract with Contractor designed elements.
