Description
Dunes of Barrow is a five-year project, funded by not-for-profit company WREN and delivered by Cumbria Wildlife Trust to reinvigorate the internationally important shingle and dune systems of Walney and Foulney Island.
The project will restore large areas of currently degraded dunes to their former glory and improve conditions for some specialist species including breeding terns and ringed plovers, to rare plants and specialist invertebrates.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust is seeking a contractor to undertake scrub clearance on South Walney Nature Reserve, Walney Island, near Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.
Scrub is to be cleared from multiple locations in the area of land known as "West of Airfield" adjacent to Walney Island Airfield, and the North Walney NNR, to enhance and improve the existing dune heath. The total area of scrub clearance is approximately 5ha.
Work must be completed by 28th March 2017.

Scrub clearance Specifications
1. Background to Dunes of Barrow Project
Dunes of Barrow is a five-year project, funded by not-for-profit company WREN and delivered by Cumbria Wildlife Trust to reinvigorate the internationally important shingle and dune systems of Walney and Foulney Island.
The project will restore large areas of currently degraded dunes to their former glory and improve conditions for some specialist species including breeding terns and ringed plovers, to rare plants and specialist invertebrates.
2. Overview
Scrub is to be cleared from multiple locations in the area of land known as "West of Airfield" adjacent to Walney Island Airfield, and the North Walney NNR, to enhance and improve the existing dune heath. The total area of scrub clearance is approximately 5ha, and the approximate locations are shown on the attached map.
Specific details of the locations are to be discussed and marked on the ground during a mandatory site walkover, to be arranged.
All cut material to then be chipped in-situ.
3. Timings
Work must be completed by the 28th March 2017.
4. Requirements
a. Description of works
i. The contractor is to provide all labour, all equipment, and any other items necessary for the work.
ii. The Contractor will provide day-to-day supervision of the work and will maintain close contact with the Dunes of Barrow Co-ordinator throughout the works.
iii. The Contractor will provide all equipment, all fuel and maintain all equipment required for the completion of the project.
iv. Treatment via cutting of all scrub within the area as shown coloured on the attached map and from the site visit.
v. Vehicular access will be via the BAE North Walney airfield. Security is tight for access and BAE will require certain information to be discussed to the successful contractor.
vi. The work site lies within an area designated as open access land. Contractors must ensure that the work is executed in a manner which takes account of the possible presence of members of the public and their dogs and adopt appropriate control measures; identified in their risk assessment.
