Description

UoN requires an instrument that can measure the surface profile of objects up to 20 cm in lateral size, with a resolution able to detect features down to 10 nm, in a non-contact manner. The machine will be able to investigate a wide range of projects and technics related to surfaces, coatings and multilayers utilising technics ranging from PVD to liquid plasma spraying to chemically and mechanically modified structures. Materials such as defects on coatings that are electrically insulating but thermally conducting, interfaces, electrode interfaces for batteries and fuel cells, microdevices, ice-phobic coatings, microcracks formation on the surface of a large gear or turbine blade, surface finish on magnetic materials, sample thickness measurements for thin film analysis and so on. The instrument should be able to provide an optical image as well as a 3D height profile of the surface. The output should be a file format suitable for further analyses with surface metrology software already available at UoN.
