Description

Nursing, midwifery, and health visiting constitute the largest professional group within the NHS, however there is a lack of tangible opportunities for them to gain experience of strategic influence at nation level.

To bridge this gap, the CNO for England is proposing an ongoing cohort of CNO Senior Clinical Nurse Fellows. These CNO Senior Clinical Nurse Fellow roles would offer a mechanism to bridge the existing gap between senior nurse leadership at a trust level to senior leadership at a strategic national level. The placement of these roles within the national and regional CNO team would be an opportunity for a cadre of nurse leaders to influence and deliver policy and strategic objectives with the support, mentorship, and networks of team CNO.

These posts would support the existing direction of travel for development of the leadership pipeline whist also providing a tangible sign to the profession that nurses are valued at both an operational and strategic level of the NHS for England. This would provide a lived example of the intent of the NHS People Plan to value, retain, and develop nurses at all levels.
NHSEI are looking to commission a bespoke, evaluated leadership development programme with the aim to equip senior clinical nurse fellows with the resource to understand themselves and how they make sense of the environment in order to enhance their personal leadership effectiveness in line with the new ICS architecture.
