Description

The Office for Statistical Regulation is aware that there is a substantial body of research examining citizen's understanding, responses to and use of statistics, covering issues ranging from studies examining the emotional response of citizen's to published statistics, through to language experiments supporting the release of statistics aimed at improving interpretation. A variety of organisations have and continue to examine these issues, including, although not limited to FullFact, the Centre for evidence Based Medicine, National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), the Winton Centre, the Harding Centre, and a range of other academic institutions in the UK and abroad.
OSR would like to commission a literature review of this body of research. The review will enable us to gain a greater understanding of the impact of statistics on public understanding, and how producers/publishers of statistics can ensure that their statistics are interpreted as they intend.
