Description

The Future Nurse and Future Midwife Standards for Education published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council herald a step change for the professions. To maximise the impact of these standards on enhancing professional skills, we need to consider new and innovative ways to prepare students for registration as a qualified nurse or midwife. The work specified in this contract will focus on the development of practice related skills and proficiencies.

Ongoing increases in the numbers of pre-registration students are projected and we must have confidence that every student has access to high quality practice learning opportunities. There are growing pressures on traditional practice placements and associated supervision capacity, and it is essential to identify alternative or supplementary approaches to supporting students. In future, all students must experience a broad range of practice related experiences which are designed to equip them with the skills and competencies they need to meet the required NMC outcomes. In consequence we are now exploring the use of new and emerging technologies to support the acquisition of the skills, proficiencies and confidence required in practice. This is especially pertinent given the rapid changes occurring in health care services with growing reliance on new technologies in care delivery.

This project will focus on mapping the new NMC Future Nurse Standards against the potential for utilising a wider range of innovative simulated and technology-based approaches to helping students to develop the skills, confidence and proficiencies they must possess to become safe and effective practitioners. This project will explore how such existing or developing technologies may be used as alternatives to traditional practice placements.
