Description

The contract will be commissioned as a research project to explore the use of drone and remote sensing technology to help tackle water pollution arising from metal mines in Wales & England.

Work with academic partner or commercial company to trial different drones and Hyperspectral sensors.

Develop the use of 'drones' for operational and compliance work across Government.

Align relevant biophysical characteristics data derived from Living Wales (satellite derived) with the project and feed outputs from project into Living Wales.

Trial drone mounted LiDAR sensor and very high resolution stereo optical sensors to capture DEMs of site.

Investigate if temperature is measurable, to help identify drainage and seepage points around the mines (could also be applied to coal mines) potentially leading to opportunities for geothermal & renewable technologies for example.

The intention is for the work to feed into and influence remediation strategies being developed by regulators for priority catchments.

Evaluate effective use of remote sensing technology for wider Government site investigation and land use compliance monitoring.

Create opportunity for research institutions and innovators.

Present and disseminate findings of the work at the 4th Annual International MineXchange event.

The contract will run from February 2019 to March 2020.
