Description

The main objectives are to:
Support the antenatal screening programme and offer counselling to pregnant women and couples affected by haemoglobinopathies in a timely manner and facilitate informed choices in regards to their present and future pregnancies.
Deliver counselling to those with Haemoglobin variants (newborns and families) and those who would like to know their haemoglobin status.
Improve the quality of life, reduce complications and achieve the lowest possible mortality and morbidity rates for SCD and Thalassaemia through newborn screening, early detection, prophylaxis and treatment of these conditions.
Provide education and support to patients and carers for self/home management of long term conditions and adherence with home medication.
Provide support to patients and carers in home management of milder sickle cell crises and support after discharge from hospital.
Provide efficient support to individuals and families affected by Haemoglobinopathy by co-ordinating care by liaising with GPs, hospitals, community health services, social services, educational, welfare services, maternity genetic counselling service and other agencies.
Improve the quality of life of those who are affected by providing assistance in accessing
relevant provision.
Establish and facilitate local user groups and forums and provide support and educational resource by providing up to date knowledge about Haemoglobinopathies.
Deliver health promotion, preventative work, raising community awareness of Haemoglobinopathies and of the services available to those who are affected or concerned
about these conditions.
Increase awareness to professional in a range of organisations such as: schools GP's etc
Improve early identification of complications
Minimise hospital admission
The Contract budget is in the region of £45-£50k per annum.
