Description

School readiness is a measure of children achieving a good level of development at the end of reception as a percentage of all eligible children.
The Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) published a research report outlining what school readiness means for childcare professionals, parents and primary school teachers. What Does school ready Really Mean? shows that the majority of each group agree that children who are 'school ready;
- Have strong social skills
- Can cope emotionally with being separated from their parents
- Are relatively independent in their own personal care
- Have a curiosity about the world and a desire to learn
School readiness starts at birth, with the support of parents and caregivers, when young children acquire the social and emotional skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for success in school and life
School readiness at age five has a strong impact on future educational attainment and life chances and few children who start school behind their peers catch up by the time they leave education. Children who don't achieve a good level of development by age five struggle with:
- Social skills
- Reading
- Maths
- Physical skills
This has significant impacts on key outcomes, including educational outcomes, crime, health and death
