As part of a planned sourcing activity for the provision of an Instrument suitable for counting virus particles and other nanometre sized objects that are in aqueous suspension, Public Health England (PHE) is organising a Suppliers Days on the 23rd July 2018 in Colindale.

Within PHE, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is routinely used to visualise and identify virus particles. This is carried out for the purposes of primary diagnostics, as well as for reference microbiology, research projects and method development. Direct, TEM visualisation of negatively stained virus particles adsorbed onto EM grids is an extremely rapid and highly specific method but suffers from a lack of sensitivity and the fact that it produces (mostly) qualitative rather than quantitative data. There is a pressing need to make negative stain TEM of virus preparations more quantitative and also to have another technology, totally independent of electron microscopy, with which we can validate the virion (and other nanoparticle) numbers that we obtain with negative stain TEM. The instrument should be capable of accurately measuring of the size and concentration of nanometre-sized particles from the tens of nanometres up to a few thousand nanometres Although this will be a capital purchase, it is intended that any service, support and supply of bespoke consumables (if applicable) will be covered for the lifetime of the equipment or until PHE re-tenders the requirement.
