Description
Islington CCG's Total spend on specialist infant formula (CMPA, high energy and pre-term formula) increased significantly from 2014-2015 to 2016-2017 (>32%). The CCG therefore commissioned a pilot project (commenced in March 2018) to review whether the increase was attributed to more infants being diagnosed with CMPA or inappropriate prescribing of these nutritional products (practice audit data suggested the increase could in part be attributed to over prescribing; for example excessive volumes prescribed and prescriptions continued for longer than indicated).
The pilot project has included, the delivery of education sessions within GP Practices, audit of children prescribed specialist infant feeds and where relevant a dietetic led clinic to review infants on specialist infant feeds, not under dietetic support. The project has also implemented a rapid access clinic for infants with suspected non-IgE mediated allergy. The aim of the service is to deliver best practice dietetic support to infants with non-IgE mediated CMPA in primary care. The service will also improve CMPA prescribing education for GP's and allied health professionals.
This service will continue and expand on the work carried out during the pilot phase, including extending the rapid access clinic to cover all GP practices in Islington, twice yearly audits of GP Practice data, followed by a dietetic led clinic where appropriate and annual training for GPs and allied health professionals. The aim of the service is to deliver best practice dietetic support to infants with non-IgE mediated CMPA in primary care. The service will also improve CMPA prescribing education for GP's and allied health professionals.
