The vast majority of the historic sites are part of the National Collection of over 400 properties which are managed by the English Heritage Trust.

The historic properties contain both historic and non historic assets. They vary significantly in age, size, complexity, geographical location and type ranging from furnished historic houses, ruined castles and abbeys to prehistoric and Roman remains, industrial sites, gardens and statues. Almost all are protected as scheduled ancient monuments and /or listed buildings, registered historic gardens, conservation areas and a few are World Heritage Sites. Historic England is required to oversee the conservation and maintenance of these properties for the enjoyment of present and future generations . In addition, Historic England carries out a number of statutory, advisory, research and grants related functions.
