Description
The footbridge is an all-timber deck 17.7m long with a clear width of 1.77 meters between parapets. The footbridge has a humpback design, with a headroom clearance of 1.44 meters at the midspan and 0.45 m on the eastern side and 0.55 m on the western side over the canal river. The existing structure was in poor condition and is to be replaced with a wider footbridge to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and disabled commuters. The widened footbridge will require wider abutments and footpath approaches on both side of the footbridge.
The existing approaches to the bridges will need to be reprofiled to match the wider bridge and will involve removal of vegetation, reprofiling and reconstruction of the embankments, and resurfacing of the footpath.
Temporary removal of fences and gates at the Eastern entrance of the park (specifically, Wickham Road). - Tree pruning and temporary removal of park furniture to facilitate the movement of construction equipment along the approach footpaths. - Removal of the existing footbridge components. - The construction of new reinforced concrete abutments. - The manufacture, delivery, and installation of the Timber deck, as well as the associated components. - To ensure a smooth and safe transition to the new footbridge deck level and width, the footpath approaches will undergo resurfacing. This process will provide a gradual slope and maintain the desired width, facilitating seamless pedestrian movement and ensuring accessibility for all users.
The work areas will need to be secured to ensure those using the footpaths and roads adjoining the site are prevented from entering work areas. A logistics Plan is expected. Compound area is to be agreed with the client.
The arboricultural constraints identified within the Arboricultural Survey Report should be used to guide the design process of any future redevelopment proposals for the Site towards the preparation of an arboriculturally justified scheme.
