Description
The Trust currently has a requirement to provide expert .care from stoma staff, clinicians including allied professionals and stoma care companies to all service users, these include patients, carers, ward and community. Physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals work closely to provide a holistic and caring service. The team strives for excellence in caring for this group of patients with complex and often embarrassing problems.
2019 figures show that 202 new stomas (162 formed at Lewisham and Greenwich Trust and 40 were referred discharged into the area from other hospitals). This requirement will cover University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth hospital Woolwich as well as associated communities.
In addition to initial new stomas, there are many other patients supported by the stoma CNS:
• Patients seen and counselled preoperatively that do not have a stoma.
• Follow up of existing stoma patients, continues year on year.
• Referrals received of existing patients not previously known to the service who move into the area or not been referred previously.
• Patients with a stoma are that are readmitted
• Patients with a stoma admitted for other medical / surgical reasons
• There is also a requirement for stoma CNS's to use their expertise for the management of some wounds and fistulas.
Current and new Delivery Model
Currently we have two suppliers providing a nurse each, one at QEH and one at UHL including community. These are provided free of charge.
For this new contract the Trust wishes to employ its own nurses with a single supplier sponsoring each post including any administrative support.
There is also a requirement for the provision of contingency staff to support stoma staff in emergency situations where staff numbers are reduced.
There are no restrictions upon the delivery method that the supplier chooses to use whilst this is free of charge to the Trust.
