Description

OVERVIEW
Barrow Borough Council has secured £1.1m in funding through Historic England's High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme to support the regeneration of the historic Duke Street, Barrow in Furness, as one of 14 historic high streets across the North West to receive this funding.
The project, called Re:discover Barrow, will include physical improvements to properties via a third party grant scheme, enhancements to public realm and delivery of cultural activities to regenerate and restore local historic character and encourage people to learn about the history of Duke Street and the wider area. The programme will also aim to show the importance of protecting and enhancing Barrow's rich heritage.
It is hoped that this activity will support establishing and sustaining a new offer on Duke Street and within the surrounding area as retail led high streets become less viable.
A key part of the Re:discover Barrow project is to deliver a series of public realm improvements within the area as defined in the attached plan. The improvements include making the space immediately behind the Town Hall more usable for events and activities and to improve / create a number of public spaces along the High Street through the use of both permanent and regular 'pop up' public realm. The funding allocation to the public realm improvements is circa £500,000.00.
Maps showing the boundary of the HSHAZ and its location within Central Barrow Conservation Area can be found in Appendix 1.
