Description

Defra procuring on behalf of Natural England: Liverpool Bay SPA is classified for important wintering numbers of common scoter and red throated diver. The link to the Liverpool Bay SPA conservation advice package is here:http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/3236717

Common scoter and red throated diver are known to be sensitive to disturbance from shipping traffic (Garthe & Huppop, 2004; Kaiser et al. 2006; Schwemmer et al. 2011; Furness et al , 2013). As a result of the sensitivity of these species and the creation of several Special Protection Areas with these species as named features, an increasing amount of Natural England's work involes considering impact from shipping on populations of these birds within SPAs. For example, recently Natural England has had to advise on a proposal to establish a new hovercraft route between Barrow and Liverpool and therefore passing through the Liverpool Bay SPA. The aim of this project, therefore is to improve the evidence base concerning the effects of shipping on bird distribution; in particular to quantify the temporal and spatial scales of indirect habitat loss caused by different types of shipping.

The primary aim is to get a better understanding of how shipping affects the distribution of red throated divers and common scoter in Liverpool Bay SPA.
