Description

The site lies within the boundary of the former Avenue Coking Works, which has historically been used as a colliery, lime and ironworks and most recently a coke and chemical works. The coking works closed in 1992 and the land - including the Site - has been subject to a voluntary remediation scheme, commissioned by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Remediation of the wider Avenue land parcel commenced in 2009 and is now largely complete. However, a sub-surface perched groundwater unit remains in the vicinity of the River Rother at the north east corner of the site.

The objectives of the Project are as follows:

1. Construction of environmental management reed bed incorporating:
• Excavation to formation for new reed bed structure with 1:3.5 batters
• Partially lined reed bed trench with gabion walls
• Soil infilled reed bed
• Ground water cut off inlet structure incorporating stone/gravel medium, rainwater collection,
• baffles, solids collection pipe, odour collection pipe
• Reed bed outlet incorporating stone/gravel medium and outlet pipe
• High level gravel reed bed
• High level reed bed discharge chamber with flow control
• Piped discharge to river
• Sheet pile groundwater flow cut off walls
• Access steps etc.

2. Landscaping to reed bed batter and areas affected by the works (Zone 2 fill area and stockpile area)

3. Treatment of groundwater flow during construction and establishment of reed bed

4. Safety fencing around reed bed

5. Reinstatement of Multi User Route
