Description

Critical to the delivery of Vision 2025, our transformation programme of the National Railway Museum, York and Locomotion, Shildon; is the provision of a collection care facility to promote the care and management of the Science Museum Group's rail vehicle collection. The proposal focuses on finding a team to design a new building to store collections which can also be visited by the public. The circa 4,000 sqm building needs to integrate with the existing museum site and its purpose is to house 40-50 rail vehicles from the Science Museum Group's world-class collection. The building has a 2.9 million GBP construction budget.Coined Locomotion Building 2, the facility will deliver a sustainable, low maintenance, low energy usage building, which is sympathetic to the nearby conservation area, further contributes to placemaking on the site, and is accessible to all. As the most significant change to Locomotion, since opening in 2004, the building will provide an enhanced and more inviting presence for the museum, emphasising its pivotal role as a cultural cornerstone for the community. The museum's intention is that Locomotion Building 2 is holistically conceived as an integrated ensemble of spaces with sustainability a key hallmark of the project. It is recognised that this major new addition will have an impact on the existing buildings and structures across the estate. Therefore, proposed enhancements to the surrounding landscape and facilities will be instrumental to the design.
