Description

This procurement is to gain knowledge on modular construction and Small Modular Reactor's and apply the learnings to the future STEP programme.

To realise the STEP ambition, UKAEA wishes to appoint a Consultant(s) to deliver a study on the modular construction. Modular construction with manufactured components is being increasingly used in residential builds to help bring down costs (~30%) and speed up construction times. This "design for manufacture & assembly" construction approach needs to be considered from the design stage in order to fully benefit from this process. Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR) designers are using a modular approach for nuclear reactors. This work will conduct a feasibility study to enable UKAEA to work with industry to gain knowledge and experience on how modular construction and Advanced Nuclear Technologies (SMRs or AMRs) design experience can be applied to STEP. Additionally, we wish the supplier to conduct a study on how Advanced Nuclear Technologies balance of plant design can be applied to STEP.
