Description

The NHS England Children and Young People's (CYP) Transformation Programme recognises the role of youth workers in healthcare settings. This acknowledgment is highlighted by the ongoing implementation of our 18-month pilot embedding Youth Workers into acute settings across each NHS England region. The pilot is scheduled to end in March 2025, followed by an independent evaluation report to build on the existing evidence of the impact of health care-based Youth Workers.

Operating as a youth worker within a hospital setting demands a unique set of skills that cannot be easily transferred from other contexts. Extensive stakeholder engagement has revealed the absence of a standardised framework tailored specifically for youth workers in healthcare environments.

The toolkit development process will involve thorough research into the unique challenges and opportunities present in healthcare settings concerning youth engagement. The delivery partner will work closely with the NHS England CYP Transformation team and key stakeholders to understand the specific requirements and objectives of the toolkit.

The delivery partner should have expertise in framework/toolkit development in collaboration with stakeholders and subject matter experts, youth engagement, and knowledge of healthcare settings. They should also demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and youth-centred approaches. This project offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the enhancement and expansion of youth work services within healthcare contexts, improving the well-being and outcomes for young people accessing healthcare services.

The development of this toolkit is crucial for expanding provision of non-clinical professionals across various healthcare settings, enhancing the quality and consistency of care delivery.

Moreover, toolkits for youth work within school settings and addressing gang/violence issues have garnered positive feedback regarding their effectiveness. This highlights the urgency of developing a similar, tailored toolkit specifically for healthcare environments.

The delivery partner will work closely with the CYP Transformation team to understand the specific requirements and objectives of the toolkit. Key deliverables from the delivery partner include:

Stakeholder Engagement
Toolkit Design
Resources
Feedback Mechanism
Project management
