Economic productivity is one of the key challenges facing the North of England, the "Northern Powerhouse", and needs to be addressed if the region is to more strongly contribute to economic growth within the UK.
Partners across the North of England - led by the Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and the N8 universities of the North, and in partnership with Innovate UK and the BEIS Smart Specialisation Hub - are keen to more effectively support innovation, and the commercialisation of the region's excellence in business and nationally/ internationally competitive specialisms in science and research. This will complement work in local innovation eco-systems, and by Innovate UK nationally.
The primary objective is to draw together a strategic evidence base about Northern innovation strengths and assets, opportunities and eco-systems drawing from a range of published reports and through engagement with key innovation partners.
A secondary objective is to identify a deliverable set of innovation-related activities that are best undertaken at pan-Northern level, where collaborative action can improve the productivity and competitiveness of places in the north and the north as a whole.
