Description

The 'Union Chain Bridge: crossing borders, inspiring communities' is an ambitious project involving the conservation of the historically and internationally significant Grade I/Category A listed Union Chain Bridge and an extensive programme of public engagement. The structure unifies Scotland and England across the River Tweed, promoting both the historical context of the bridge and inspiring a new generation of engineers through its international importance.

The Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Consultant is to carry out a range of testing methods on the wrought iron chains, links and pins, to identify surface breaking cracks and section loss. The Consultant must provide method statements, sequencing and risk assessments, for their intended works. The Chains are to be checked for fatigue cracking, and evidence of historic forge welding around the eyelets and rod. The chain links, pins and hanger caps shall also be checked for cracking. In addition a number of hangers have previously failed due to fatigue induced fracture, and will also be subject to NDT.
