Description

As part of the April and May general bird survey visit, areas of reedbed should be viewed to determine if there is marsh harrier breeding activity. Each area of reedbed should be viewed from a suitable vantage point for 5 hours on each visit. Activity should be mapped using Bird Activity mapping codes.
Surveys can be undertaken at any time of day and during all weather conditions with the exception of extreme wet and wind.
A probable nest site is one at which a female carrying nest material stays at a potential nest site for an hour or more and / or a female stays at the nest-site for more than 4 hours and receives a prey delivery from the male during this time.
