Description
The Shrewsbury Flax Mill Maltings Project is Historic England's flagship rescue project. Working in partnership with Shropshire Council and the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings, Historic England completed an initial stage of the project in November 2015, when the new Visitor Centre was opened.
The Main Mill & Kiln Project is the next and largest element of the site's rescue and regeneration. This will see the full repair and restoration of the Main Mill and the adjoining Kiln, with a heritage centre on the ground floor and four floors of offices. The Heritage Lottery Fund is the major funder for the Project, with funding also from Historic England and Shropshire Council.
The Main Mill & Kiln Project is now being undertaken in three phases.. Phase 2 will include the remaining repairs to the external envelope and structure of the Main Mill, together with major repairs to the Jubilee Tower and Kiln, at a cost of around ?5m. . It is intended that Phase 2 will commence in February 2019 and complete by March 2020.
The Phase 2 contract will now include:
o Full repairs to the external envelope of the Main Mill, including the Engine Houses at either end of the central block and the Jubilee Tower, with re-roofing, brickwork, window repairs etc
o Structural repairs to the Main Mill and Jubilee Tower, including the insertion of new steel columns and first floor structure to the Main Mill
o Full repairs to the external envelope (re-roofing, brickwork, windows) and structure of the Kiln, with insertion of new steel structure and stairs
o Delivery of skills training, work placements and public engagement activities will be an important part of this contract
The contract will be tendered as a Restricted Two Stage procedure , Interested suppliers are invite to express interest and return PRE QUALIFICATION documents via the HE Procurement portal.
