National Marine Facilities - Sea Systems (NMF-SS) operates two ocean-going Royal Research vessels on behalf of Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook.
Both vessels undertake cruises to support interdisciplinary ocean research ranging from the tropics to the edge of the ice sheets and continental margins to deep ocean projects.
RRS Discovery will complete her current planned science cruise program for 2016 in the Canaries in December 2016. Following that there is capacity in the vessel's programme to accommodate a maintenance period prior to the ship commencing science equipment trials in the same waters.
Work being undertaken during this period will enhance the science capabilities of the vessel.
Extending the Bullhorn Boom, fitting a new outboarding sheave and a docking head for the ROV is the main focus for this period alongside. As the suppliers of this equipment are various it is anticipated that minor alterations will require to be undertaken locally to provide an operable system.
We are also taking the opportunity to undertake a few minor vessel modifications to improve vessel operability and access.
