Description
Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) is a £45m transformation programme hosted by Nottingham CityCare Partnership, supported by the Big Lottery Fund's A Better Start (ABS) initiative. SSBC is a partnership of parents and professionals working together, through co-production and parent powered change, to drive the delivery of the programme and focus on helping children to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.
In Nottingham, our programme operates across four communities (Arboretum, Aspley, Bulwell and St Ann's) and seeks to positively impact outcomes for 0-3 year old children in the areas of communication and language, social and emotional development and nutrition.
Nottingham was chosen from 152 Local Authority areas initially invited to bid. Small Steps Big Changes is one of only five programmes nationally. The programme commenced in April 2015.
The aim of the new service is to support, develop and train our Parent Champions and Parent Ambassadors and work with our wider partners in the community to strengthen the community voice within SSBC and our commitment to building community capacity through our 'Community Connection' approach. The work will focus on Parent Champions and Ambassadors initially and will include:
Coaching and Support to enable them to develop as individuals and as a group.
Help to identify, tackle and overcome challenges and solve problems.
Support to explore new opportunities and develop a pathway to greater autonomy and self-determination including development options for individuals and help to identify options to create a sustainable legacy for the Parent Champion group both within and beyond SSBC.
Support to develop their role as system leaders within a system change agenda/process.
The development and implementation of a bespoke training programme for Parent Champions (and Ambassadors) with the aim to help them grow and develop as individuals and as a group including into other roles within SSBC and beyond. The training programme will take account of and build-on the strengths and skills within the two groups.
Working with partners to develop volunteering opportunities for community members involved in SSBC.
A Forward Plan for Parent Champions for the next 1, 3 and 5 years.
The service will provide less intensive support and guidance to our Parent Ambassadors on a more flexible basis. It is expected that this will include at least regular group meetings and opportunities for training and development. Parent Ambassadors should be supported and trained to follow a pathway into Parent Champion roles or other roles within and outside the programme.
