Description

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is developing further extensions to Midland Metro through the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA). The extension from New Street Station to Centenary Square, and from Line 1 to the Rail Station in Wolverhampton are currently under construction with an extensions to Five Ways and from the centre of Birmingham to Digbeth via the HS2 Curzon Street Station ("BEE") in development and going through the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) process.

The MMA is developing the East Birmingham Solihull Extension ("EBSE") which will link from the terminus of the BEE to Birmingham Airport and the proposed HS2 Interchange Station via Bordesley and Chelmsley Wood.

The EBSE is approximately 16.5km and will run from High Street Deritend at the junction with Gibb Street and turn down Adderley Street towards the Birmingham City Football ground and continue through Bordesley past Heartlands Hospital then along the Meadway through Lea Hall. From its junction with Cooks Lane, it continues along Chelmsley Road alongside Chelmsley Wood Centre then towards Birmingham Business Park. From here the EBSE continues to Birmingham International Rail Station and through the NEC before terminating at the proposed HS2 interchange Station.

The EBSE is programmed to be delivered and open to passengers by 2026. It is currently anticipated that a Transport and Works Act Application (TWAO) application was be submitted in September 2018.

Powers within the TWAO application are to contain powers of land acquisition as well as works and planning powers. According to TWAO process timescales following the submission in December 2018, if no deferment was sought, any TWAO Inquiry would be likely to take place around August / September 2019.

The MMA is in the process of concluding the preliminary design and thus identifying the area of land required to be referenced. In addition, additional land for tram stabling and as construction sites may also be needed.

The tender documentation can be accessed via: https://wmca.bravosolution.co.uk/web/login.html

Closing date for tender submissions is: 12noon on Friday 18th May 2018.
