Description

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC) ('The Council') is looking to appoint a main contractor to carry out permanent roof repairs to the Tonbridge Castle Gatehouse.
Tonbridge Castle is located in the centre of Tonbridge, just north of the River Medway. The ground within the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Listing Nr. 1013359) as well as the medieval stone gatehouse and surviving walls. The gatehouse and castle grounds generally are operated as a tourist attraction. Many schools also visit the attraction for educational purposes.
The external areas of the site are accessible at all times to members of the public but can be shut with prior agreement. The site hosts numerous events throughout the course of the year, the majority of which take place on the Bailey Lawn. These include music events in the summer and a Christmas event in the winter.

The current roof was installed on the Gatehouse as a millennium project in the early 2000s and received lottery funding. Prior to that there had not been a roof on the structure for many years. The work included:
- The reconstruction to archaeological standards of missing features, such as walling, paving, spiral staircase, oak floor and roof structures at basement, ground and first floor levels
- The provision of new electrical services for lighting and audio-visual presentation
- Visitor access to a roof level viewing platform
