Description

The area in front of the Co-Op and the Pharmacy feels very much like a public space, however it is privately owned. The footway surfacing is in poor condition with large concrete slabs, which in places have been lifted by the roots of the three Gingko trees. As this is the only access to the shops, cycle stands & ATM this is a very busy area with people moving through the area in many different directions. The desire is to create a high quality space which improves the streetscape. The works are to include replacing the surfacing of the forecourt with a more suitable and high quality material and add to the street furniture to create a multi-use community space within the centre of the Romsey community. The project will include works to redress the level of the adjacent footway which has damage on the corner of Catharine Street and some sunken areas. Materials will be a small unit paving and a porous surfacing around the trees to both improve the conditions of the street trees and improve the sustainable drainage. High density cycle racks shall be installed and bespoke benches and planters constructed for the site. The adjacent public footway is primarily 400x400mm concrete slabs with some areas of tarmac where vehicle overrunning has been a problem. Sections of the footway slabs will require to be relayed to remove settlement from overrunning vehicles
