Description

Equipment is being developed for monitoring the geometry of abandoned flooded mine shafts for indications that a change to the lining has occurred since the previous inspection. Such changes are indicative of potential failure of the lining which could lead to collapse with the consequential risk to property and life. Means are required for detecting obstacles in the shaft to prevent collision with such obstructions and potentially damage. Obstacle detection will take the form of a CCTV camera for use above water (as referred to here) and a sonar altimeter for use underwater.
