The University of Derby has 18,485 Higher Education students based in the UK (12,895 full-time and 5590 part-time, based on Higher Education Statistics Agency figures for 2017-2018) and employs c4000 staff.
The University of Derby Sports Centre is located at the main campus at Kedleston Road and has a major role in supporting, promoting and delivering academic programmes as well as increasing participation in sport and physical activity, and positively impacting on the wellbeing of the University's students, staff and local community.
The Sports Centre is located at the main Kedleston Road site in Derby, approx. 1.5 miles from the city centre. The £10.8 million centre was opened in 2015 and has a current membership of 1567 (based on March 2020 figures): 1109 student, 175 staff, and 283 community/graduate/other members.
Facilities include eight badminton court sports hall, 70-station fitness suite, two dedicated fitness studios, two squash courts, a climbing wall, and a performance strength and conditioning suite. Externally there are two 3G pitches (football/rugby) and two tennis courts.
The new operator will:
• Provide a safe and compliant facility, environment and service that adheres to all current and future statutory guidelines via robust reporting and maintenance procedures.
• Deliver a wide range of evidence-based opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity, that truly represents and engages increasing numbers of students and staff from beginner through to elite level, that exceed customer expectations.
• Increase and measure membership, retention and activity levels in students and staff by providing appropriate infrastructure and membership systems.
• Provide a range of opportunities for identified groups who have no or low levels of physical activity, including those from underrepresented/target groups. Introduce an Active University Community Programme that should address these, and other challenges, by providing increased opportunities to engage a wide section of our students, staff and local community and include targeted programmes for inactive, social, recreational, and competitive activities.
• Delivery of insight-led, targeted interventions to support mental health for students and staff. And as a result, providing wider social value through strong and positive engagement with the University and key partners.
