Description

Agriculture is a small but significant contributor to UK GHG emissions. The sector currently accounts for around 10% of total UK emissions, but this figure is rising as the rest of the economy decarbonises. The majority of greenhouse gases in UK agriculture come from methane and nitrous oxide (55% and 31% of agricultural emissions respectively) which are often less well understood than CO2 emission pathways.
Carbon auditing tools are a valuable part of increasing understanding of on farm emission and where they arise, and should empower farmers and other actors in the agricultural supply chain to take targeted actions to reduce their impacts.

This project aims to bring some clarity on the extent to which commonly used tools diverge in their estimates of carbon footprint for a range of well-defined reference systems. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the major sources of divergence and to provide some recommendations on specific areas for further work to tighten up the guidance in accordance with the best available science
