The Authority has a requirement to provide a surety of supply to the CBRN MK4a Individual Protective Equipment (IPE), a capability that is available for the whole force. The Mk4a is designed as an over suit to shed liquid chemical contamination and provide an acceptable level of Chemical Weapon (CW) vapour protection. The MK4a comprises of jacket and trousers. It forms part of a protective ensemble with the respirator, gloves, and over-boots.

The Authority requires the supplier to purchase and stockpile material used for MK4a suits. Should a need occur, the supplier will be expected to fulfill a large order within a short timeframe. The aim of this project is not to enhance the MK4a's capability, only to maintain its performance requirement and to be able to order more of the same, if required. The assurance of the supply chain is paramount within this project; to be able to purchase and re-buy rapidly whilst not reducing its quality. Within the contract, the supplier will be expected to produce an annual batch of test suits to confirm they meet acceptable threat thresholds and quality standards.

The Mk4a must be able to inter-operate with all other components, including Gloves (Airboss Moulded Gloves), Boots (Moulded Airboss CBRN Lightweight Overboot) and Respirator (General Service Respirator).
