Description

The research aims to improve the understanding of rural economies in England through an improved appreciation of data sources on how economies operate in both rural and urban areas. This will include data sources on the experiences at a more local level of people and businesses based in rural areas, especially by comparison with the experiences of people and businesses in urban areas to identify similarities and differences. The scope of the research covers England only.

The project will cover a breadth of research relating to the economy in rural areas and the issues that rural people and rural businesses face compared with their urban counterparts. To understand any barriers faced as well as any potential advantages to rural people and rural businesses, the research will involve an in-depth review of current business and economic statistics, including both government and non-government data sources (both commercial and non-commercial).

The project is intended to support the work of the Rural and Place Team (RPT) in Defra, providing them with an in-depth, clear understanding of the rural economy and the experiences of rural people and rural businesses more locally. This can be used to inform concise messaging to facilitate efficient engagement with Other Government Departments (OGDs) on relevant issues, and to provide support in the targeting of local economic interventions in rural areas.

The project is expected to last 6 months, from September 2021 to February 2022. An initial economic framework is required approximately 4 weeks after contract award in October 2021 and the final report in February 2022.
