Brief Description of Requirement
Background to this project
We want communities across the UK - particularly those that are marginalised and under-represented - to be able to play an active role in the research and innovation system and to benefit more directly from it.
We want to go beyond traditional, project-based approaches to community engagement and investigate approaches that build long-term capacity and infrastructure for a more collaborative, open and equitable research and innovation system.
We want to create opportunities for under-represented communities - and the knowledge, expertise and experience they possess - to become an integral part of the research and innovation system and the wider knowledge economy.
Investing in infrastructure
In order to create a research and innovation system that values and includes communities we need to invest not only in projects and time-bound activity, but also in baseline capacity, including talented people, relationships, brokerage infrastructure, knowledge mobilisation and network building.
Through this research, we want to discover which types of capacity and infrastructure are required, the timescales on which they can be developed and where they are most needed.
We want to invest in capacity that will help to:
1. create sustainable, equitable, purposeful relationships between communities and the professional research and innovation sector
2. facilitate community-led research and innovation initiatives
3. embed new approaches to working with communities into the research and innovation system.
