Description
Our vision in commissioning these services is to ensure that "Extra Care Housing is specialist housing designed for older people. It is similar to sheltered housing but also offers help with personal care and household chores. Extra Care Housing is to support both independent living and provide on-site personal care services. It is a model used across England in various forms and promotes enablement and independence, community integration and promotes high quality care. It is an alternative to residential and care homes and helps maintain independence and the ability for an individual to maintain their own front door.
Traditionally those service users whose care plans identify that they need 24/7 support, and in particular cover overnight to support them in and out of bed and for emergencies, would be offered residential care. This can cost circa £600-£800 per week.
This model is an intermediate step, and continues to allow an individual their own accommodation with their own front door and as much independence as they want, but with the added value of having cover during the night. Evidence suggests this extends someone's independence and increased quality of life, and costs an average of £400 per week. For some, there may be a time when Extra Care housing is no longer appropriate but it's more likely an individual would need nursing care or end of life care - often avoiding residential costs all together.
