Based on the current evidence it is generally assumed that the impact of demersal seines on sedimentary habitats is much reduced when compared to more penetrative demersal fishing gears. However, there remains considerable uncertainty as to the extent to which demersal seining may affect the structure and functioning of such habitats. This limits our understanding of how demersal seining may affect the integrity of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), their designated features and ultimately the achievement of site Conservation Objectives. Therefore, current management of the impact of seine netting follows the precautionary principle, which aims to reduce the likehood of significant impact on the marine environment.

The aim of the project is to develop a better understanding of the physical impact of seine net fishing on benthic habitats, with a focus on habitats designated for protection within the UK MPA network
