Description

In June this year, the UK Government accepted the Committee's advice and Parliament legislated the setting of a more ambitious target to reduce UK GHG emissions to net-zero by 2050. Achieving net-zero in the UK would lead the global effort to limit the rise in global average temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This replaces the previous legislated 2050 UK target which required at least a 80% reduction by 2050.
The new legislated net zero target requires contribution from all sectors of the economy, including the agriculture and land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sectors. In our scenarios consistent with the net zero advice ('further ambition scenario'), we estimated combined emissions from these two sectors declining by 60% by 2050 compared to 2017.
These estimates were informed by analysis undertaken for the Committee's 2018 Land Use report . The report demonstrated that deep emissions reduction in agriculture and land use could be achieved, although it would require significant change in the way land is used and managed in the UK.
