Description

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens combines an early example of a Greek Revival hall, with a Picturesque landscape incorporating the remains of a medieval Castle and Jacobean house.
Situated 9 miles north-west of Newcastle airport, on one of the main roads to Scotland, Belsay came into state guardianship in 1980 having been in the ownership of the Middleton family since the 13th century.

We have been awarded an HLF stage 1 pass for a project to:
o Create a holistic interpretive offer, focused on families and centred on the castle end of the site
o Carry out urgent repairs on Belsay Hall roof, repairs on the stables, kennels and cottages next to the castle, which will be used as a family hub and cafe
o Arrest the deterioration of the designed landscape
o Provide training and volunteering opportunities in garden conservation and heritage
o Revive Belsay's formal education offer with a focus on natural sciences, arts and crafts
o Create of a woodland play area for families
The project needs the interpretive design to be taken up to RIBA Stage 3/Scheme Design stage for the HLF Round 2 bid to be submitted in early May 2019.

If the stage 2 bid is successful then the interpretive designers will be retained to complete the detailed design.

The total budget for interpretation is ?160,000, of which we anticipate ?30,000 will be for your creative design fees. This project is for design only.
