Description
Following a successful pilot year, the University of Birmingham is planning to recruit a number of apprentices over the next 3 years in support of the University strategy to develop local talent and support entry points into the University talent pipeline. In addition the University will utilise apprenticeship training for existing staff where a role clearly meets the definition of an apprentice.
The programme will begin for existing internal staff from May 2017 and for new entrants from September 2017. The new entrant scheme will look to recruit 20 to 40 apprentices working in different areas of the University including:
* Hospitality and Accommodation Services (Catering, Hospitality, Child Care, University of Birmingham Sport, Post and Portering) ;
* Estates;
* IT Services;
* Technical roles within Colleges;
* Administrative roles within Colleges;
* Other roles yet to be determined.
The University of Birmingham will look to sustainably optimise use of its apprenticeship levy (In excess of £1 million per annum) to support genuine apprenticeships and career development for University employees.
The University of Birmingham is looking to engage training providers on a preferred supplier list. The preferred supplier list will be the first choice for delivery of all apprenticeship training (Levels 2 - 5) where training cannot be provided in house. The University would also expect all training providers to meet the expectations below :
* Support the University to identify appropriate apprenticeship standards to use;
* Provide high quality apprenticeship training for agreed apprenticeship standards;
* Work with the University to ensure apprenticeship standards are delivered to complement on the job training;
* Provide excellent communication with University employees. For example: Apprentices and Line Managers;
* Where a preferred supplier is not able to deliver the training, if requested, support the University in finding alternative training providers;
* Proactively support the University in recruiting apprentices;
* Assist as required with recruitment procedures;
* Liaise with the University to ensure effective induction;
* Provide the University as a minimum monthly updates on apprentice progression;
* Support the University with intervention strategies to support apprenticeship success and completion;
* Support the University as requested with events to promote the University apprenticeship scheme;
* Support the University to use its apprenticeship levy effectively so that it supports the Universities talent pipeline and staff development.
The University is looking to engage preferred suppliers in the following areas:
* Administration, Management and Leadership;
* Technicians;
* Estates - Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Apprenticeships;
* IT;
* Finance;
* Hospitality and Catering;
* Childcare.
