Description
St. George's tower is a grade 1 listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument; and it is estimated that it is probably the oldest surviving buildings, of the original Castle. It is important to note that the site, which is owned by Oxfordshire County Council, is operated by Heritage Projects Ltd under supervision by Oxford Preservation Trust. In 2019, concerns regarding the structural safety of the tower floors were raised, following routine maintenance. Investigations revealed significant amounts of decayed and damaged timber within the floor construction, at both the first and second floor levels.
