Description
Background
Bioenergy combined with Carbon Capture & Storage (BECCS) has the potential to deliver negative greenhouse gas emissions, which will be key to enabling cost-effective decarbonisation. As such, Bioenergy is one of 10 priority areas within the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) - a £1 billion fund to support innovation to develop the green technologies needed to tackle climate change.
As part of the previous Energy Innovation Portfolio funding scheme, BEIS commissioned a review and benchmarking study of Advanced Gasification Technologies, which are expected to play a significant role in the UK's net zero transition. This study has fed into the development of a new Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme (H2 BECCS), and can be downloaded here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/advanced-gasification-technologies-review-and-benchmarking
Programme Overview
The £5m Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme Phase 1 will form part of BEIS's NZIP. The programme will support technologies with the potential to produce hydrogen from biogenic feedstocks while capturing carbon dioxide (CO2).
Through a pre-commercial, fully funded procurement Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI), this programme aims to support innovative technology solutions across three categories:
1. Gasification feedstock pre-processing: The development of low cost, energy & material efficient pre-processing technologies for biogenic (including biomass and waste) feedstocks to be used in advanced gasification processes.
2. Syngas treatment & upgrading: The improvement of syngas treatment and upgrading components for hydrogen with carbon capture.
3. Other biohydrogen technologies: The development of novel biohydrogen technologies which can be combined with carbon capture. e.g. dark fermentation, anaerobic digestion, waste water treatment.
BEIS is looking to conduct this SBRI under two phases: Phase 1 - feasibility of innovation, and Phase 2 - innovation demonstration (to be confirmed) with a down-selection process between phases.
The competition for Phase 1 of the programme is scheduled to launch with the publication of an Invitation to Tender (ITT) in January 2022, with successful projects beginning in Spring 2022.
Further details will be outlined at the supplier engagement event listed below, and then confirmed at the point of ITT publication.

Details of Supplier Event:
An online pre-competition supplier engagement event will be hosted by BEIS on 23rd November 2021, 10am-12pm, with the aim of informing potential suppliers about the proposed Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme competition, including its scope, application process and timelines. It will also outline the role of BEIS, NZIP and Hydrogen BECCS in meeting the government's climate objectives, and the policy context surrounding this technology area. The event will provide an opportunity for potential suppliers to ask questions about the proposed competition and provide BEIS with feedback on the proposed competition design.
BEIS encourages attendance from potential suppliers across the bioenergy landscape including bioenergy feedstock suppliers (waste and biomass), suppliers and operators of gasification, torrefaction, anaerobic digestion and other bioenergy conversion technologies, and organisations involved in the research and development of novel biohydrogen technologies.
To attend the event, please register via Eventbrite at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hydrogen-beccs-innovation-programme-virtual-supplier-engagement-workshop-registration-198864237287
Expression of Interest
If you are unable to attend the event but would like BEIS to keep you updated about this innovation competition, please send an email to H2BECCS@beis.gov.uk with your name, email address, company and position.
