Brief description:

Sandwell Council are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic Interim Director of Public Health who is passionate about our vision of making Sandwell a healthier place to live and work.

The Interim DPH role will be inside IR35 and the contract length for up to 12 Months, ideally commencing in post early August 2024.

Reporting into the Executive Director of People with a dotted line to the Chief Executive, the Interim DPH will be responsible for determining the overall vision and objectives for public health in the Borough of Sandwell. They are accountable for delivering public health objectives and reporting annually on the outcomes and future work.

Sandwell is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country with high degrees of health inequality. This role will be front and centre in addressing the challenges we have and helping in improving the lives of all our residents.

This post requires specialist public health leadership and an appropriate span of responsibility to deliver health protection, health improvement and advice on health services. The post holder will also need to ensure that the impact on health is considered in the development and implementation of all policies.

The postholder will prepare, manage and monitor the service's budget and will ensure effective leadership, motivation and development of staff. On a regular basis they will review resources, services and partnership arrangements in order to identify opportunities to improve service delivery.

To be successful in this role the postholder will need previous high-level management experience in a local authority or health service role. They will need to have an acute understanding of the link between economic success and good health and build this into your strategy for tackling and prioritising public health issues. A good understanding and experience of working on the governments levelling up programme would be essential.

The Interim DPH will be expected to formulate a clear, targeted long-term strategy that ensures health and social care, education, housing, jobs and economic policies and infrastructure, and communities, community assets and the third sector are shaped in ways which deliver maximum improvements in health and wellbeing. They will need excellent decision-making skills and the ability to lead others and inspire positive change.
